Episode 9: Ben Bishop – Comic Book Creator

On episode nine of the podcast, we welcomed Maine comic book creator Ben Bishop to the show. Bishop is the founder and owner of Split Decision Comics based in Westbrook, Maine.

He self published his first graphic novel, the 300 page Nathan The Caveman, in 2008 followed by several smaller works. In 2011 Ben illustrated the award winning book, Lost Trail, the comic adaptation of the famous Maine story, Lost On A Mountain In Maine.

Ben created the world’s very first Split Decision Comic called, The Aggregate, a choose your own adventure style comic with 4 beginnings, 7 endings and 25 choices in between. The Aggregate was nominated for a 2018 RINGO AWARD for best original graphic novel. It was the only self published book on the ballot.

Bishop is the series artist on Kevin Eastman’s (co-creator of TMNT) new comic, Drawing Blood which raised over $100k on Kickstarter. Drawing Blood Book 2, and The Aggregate Book 2 are in the works.

In addition to being a frequent cover artist for IDW publishing’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, Ben was the artist for the TMNT Raphael macro Series, Target R.

Throughout all this Ben has also been worked on characters like the Bloodshot for Valiant Entertainment, Savage Dragon for Image comics, Batman, Transformers, Gi Joe, and more. He has also found time to drawn nearly all of Masons Brewing Company‘s beer cans.

Ben is definitely a comic creator who has close ties to his fans. He created Bishart Kids Club, a subscription service that allows fans to get boxes of his artwork and etc, as well as allows the fans to connect with via a private facebook group and message.
